Dear Friends,
This is Claudia Booker and I am a doula and midwife birth assistant in Washington DC. I am writing to request your personal assistance in making the “Heads Up on Infant Mortality” DC project a success.
This project is being done in several cities by midwives, midwifery students and doulas to bring awareness to the need for improved maternal and infant health care. We are also committed to equal access to quality midwifery care for all women, regardless of the income and insurance.
Because you are a birth advocate you are aware of the increasing number of infants who are beginning life with many challenges.
"Heads Up on Infant Mortality".
This project is to promote public awareness regarding the huge numbers of babies who do not reach their first birthday by knitting or crocheting infant hats in remembrance of them. This project is being done in Chicago, Florida, New Mexico, Richmond Virginia, and DC by me. We hope to present these infant hats to our local elected officials during the last week in September. At the end of the public awareness project the DC hats will be given to infants as "Going Home" gifts when they live the local NICU units. We need as many infant hats as we can get!!!!
A client of mine told me how heart was touched by the hats and blankets her preemie twin daughter received as a gift when they left the Washington Hospital Center NICU.
The patterns are on my web site www.BirthingHandsDC.
com. Infant hats should be sent to me by September 15th. Recently WPFW Radio did an interview on this project and I hope to get more press attention.
Two DC Mocha Moms are sponsoring teaching sessions for those who do not knit or crochet. Shayla Boyd- Gill is hosting a “Crochet-Teach In” on Tuesday August 11th, JuJu Harris is hosting a “Breakfast Knit and Teach In” on August 15th. For more information about these events, please call me at 202-236-1764.
Please make a pledge to knit or crochet 10 hats by September 15th for the Heads Up on Infant Mortality DC project. More would be better. I would like to flood local NICUs with these hats as “Going Home” gifts of their babies.
